Good news (finally)

So, I have these lefty friends who aren't too keen on Obama. (Yeah, I know, there are lots of reasons for your discontent.) Maybe this will cheer you up just a bit. Grinches, your heart might grow a size or two today:
President Barack Obama has ordered the Justice Department to stop defending the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as only between a man and woman, according to a statement Wednesday from Attorney General Eric Holder.

"The president has concluded that given a number of factors, including a documented history of discrimination, classifications based on sexual orientation should be subject to a more heightened standard of scrutiny," Holder said.

The key provisions in the law "fails to meet that standard and is therefore unconstitutional."

"Given that conclusion, the president has instructed the (Justice Department) not to defend the statute" in two pending cases in New York state, Holder said. "I fully concur with the president's determination."

That's very exciting news. I'm surprised that this didn't happen sooner. I mean come on, if you have an ounce of common sense (or even a teaspoon) it should be plain that the reasoning behind the Defense of Marriage Act is terrible.

"The Bible says so, hence it must be true." (It's also disputable as to whether or not the Bible actually states such a thing. Perhaps the NIV, but that version has been so modified by American Protestants that it's hardly credible.) Yes, a solid argument for forcing your beliefs upon this entire nation which you claim is free. If the argument for defending traditional marriage (that being the union between one man and one woman) relies upon the premise that sex is for god's holy procreation, then why do all of those who present this argument engage in sex for the sake of pleasure? (Better yet, why are the public figures who defend this argument so often caught having affairs? Or even better, homosexual themselves?) Oh my god people, come on!

(*Gladly welcomes assailing comments*)

My guess is that with Republicans controlling the House, left-wing gains will probably take the form of executive branch activity like this.

This is great news. However, this does not negate the fact that Obama has been stagnant throughout the majority of his time in office, even when the Dems had a super-majority. Moreover, Obama simply has an ideological difference than the ideology that us on the Left have. That's why, though I made phone calls and supported Obama in his 2008 bid, I am supporting Socialist Party USA candidate Stewart Alexander in his bid this year.
